Widespread mortality of warm-water coral reefs is under way, according to the 2025 Global Tipping Points Report released today. Relying on temperature overshoot — when global temperature rise temporarily exceeds and then returns to or below 1.5°C  — increases the risk of reaching additional tipping points. 

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has completed its selection of authors to their seventh assessment report. CICERO will contribute with six authors and one review editor to the world’s most comprehensive and widely used climate assessment.

As the world faces rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events, the health impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly urgent. Against this backdrop, more than 200 international researchers, policymakers, and experts on climate and health will convene in Tallinn, Estonia, from 16 to 18 October 2025 for ENBEL2025 — the second edition of the transdisciplinary conference on Connecting Health and Climate Change.

Heat is an evident cause of mortality among people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with higher risks when combined with exposure to air pollution. Kristin Aunan, research director and climate scientist at CICERO, and her team have extensively studied these effects and evaluated equitable interventions to reduce their impacts.

Governments and organizations set climate targets motivated by findings in IPCC reports. A new study by CICERO finds that an uneven representation of models and studies in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report can lead to biased statistics and policy impacts. 

Global warming has accelerated since 2010. A new CICERO-led study shows that unmasking of greenhouse-gas-driven warming due to a substantial cleanup in air pollution over East Asia can explain it.

Today, there are separate early warning systems for extreme heat and air pollution in India. A new project will assess exposure and health impacts from concurrent extreme heat and air pollution in Delhi and Kolkata and work to make a joint early warning system for both these challenges.

Would local decision-makers be more likely to act on climate change if they knew the maximum amount of co₂ that could be emitted to avoid critical climate risk in their community? Yes, argue researchers who propose a new approach that links climate risk thresholds at local level to emission pathways.
